Each design has it's own unique theme/personality that is intended to give you peace and reflection. The Mandala's hang at a distance from the wall so the light can reflect the color of the glass and shadow adding another dimesion to the piece.

Susan asked me create a unique piece for her beach house dinning area that coordinated with her surrounding interior design. This piece was a real labor of my love of light and color.

The frame is created from two intersecting oak wine barrel stays. (Thank you Matt Bills for helping with the wood intersection) The glass was hand cut into the teardrop shapes from Chardonnay (amber), Bombay Gin (blue), red wine (green) and various whiskey and bourbon bottles (clear) then fired in my kiln. Each teardrop was tediously drilled, then woven together with galvanized silver wire and hung from an eyelet hook embedded into the the oak.

Susan has been a huge supporter of my work and I am very thankful to her.

I’ve had these wall hanging ideas in the back of my mind for months. These are ideas that come at 3 am. My husband and I spent the weekend perfecting the circles and I can not love him enough for helping me bring my vision to life.

Lunar Forest

This Lunar circle (first set of photos) is crafted from a walnut remnant that I purchased in Asheville a year ago. When we sawed it in half to make the book match, it revealed these beautiful waves of color and grain. The simple copper band has been treated and textured with a pickle juice patina. It will continue to patina in time along with the copper wire S curves. I chose the rich greens and amber recycled glass to carry through the forest feel of the piece. There is a walnut square attached to the back to give the piece more dimension and shadow from the wall.

Recycled glass used: champagne and red wine (green), Pinot Noir (dark amber), vintage soda (clear and green hued clear)

Dimensions: 9” wide x 33” tall

Installation: A keyhole hanger on the back enables the piece to hang flat up against the wall. One securely embedded screw in the wall is all you need.

Lunar Sea

This Lunar circle is crafted from spalted hickory and walnut remnants. The worm holes, weathered look and natural grain pattern of the spalted hickory pair so well with the deep reddish brown of the walnut strip to carry out my Lunar moon phase. There is a walnut square attached to the back to give the piece more dimension and shadow from the wall. The copper band has been hammered and treated with a pickle juice patina. It will continue to patina in time along with the copper wire S curves. Clear recycled glass is by far my favorite medium to work with. It’s reflection of light, casting of shadows and subtle hues that change with its surroundings make the reflection of the moon on the ocean surface come to life. Various hand cut, kiln fired vintage soda, vodka, whiskey and white wine bottles were used for the glass.

Dimensions: 9” wide x 39” tall

Drift Wood and Beach Glass

"Drift Wood and Beach Glass" is a playful wall hanging that I created with recycled glass and salvaged wood and steal. The blue and aqua colors give that beach glass feeling, but with a little sparkle instead.

Weathered old pine was used for the top circle. It has been white washed to give it that drift wood beachy feel. The galvanized steal collar was salvaged from a local scrap yard and has its own weathered look. The shadow effect is caused by raising the front circle away from the wall by adding a square block to the back. (see photo above) The keyhole hanger hardware makes hanging very easy, you just need one screw (included).

The kiln fired recycled glass used is from Singleton Whiskey (aqua), Pinnacle Vodka (light blue), Riesling wine and NYR Organic Cream (cobalt blue) various vodka, bourbon and vintage soda (clear) bottles. The glass was hand cut and fired on a textured surface allowing it to sparkle when the light hits it. When you walk by the glass moves and plays a soft twinkle sound. Each piece is wrapped with galvanized wire. If hung in a well lit or sun filled area, the glass will cast colored shadows on the wall.

Trish and Rob had just finished their custom screened in porch and wanted a statement piece to really bring it to life. The peak of the end cap was a perfect frame for a rising/setting abstract sun. My idea was to create an explosive sun of light and color with star bursts surrounding it. A little nod to some vintage sun illustrations.

This piece was created from approximately 15+ amber Chardonnay bottles, a few dark amber Pinot Noir, 8 clear mini white wine bottle bottoms (star bursts), along with various clear bourbon and vodka bottles. All glass was hand cut then kiln fired to fit my layout. Each solid piece was diamond bit drilled for the weaving holes.

The frame was fabricated from aluminum T-bar by CCI Machine and Fabrication, Inc. then powder coated in matte black.

I designed the sun rays in Adobe Illustrator, then my daughter Mikayla transitioned them to a CAD drawing for ExactCut, Inc. to water jet cut them from a 22 mil copper sheet. From this point I drilled the weaving holes in the rays, ground down all the edges and holes, then added the patina. The Patina is a forced acid patina and along with a special wrapping, it took about 48 hours to achieve the marbled look.

I used about 4 rolls of 18 gauge copper wire to weave the entire piece together and to the frame.

Each side is 60” wide by 28” tall.

And finally to Trish and Rob for allowing me to create this commission piece for them.

Ada and Jim just finished building a spacious screened in porch off the back of their home. They asked me to create a fun and colorful piece to highlight their new outdoor space.

Copper Rays was created to bring in sun shine 24/7. The copper rays were first drawn by myself and then CAD drawn by my daughter (great to have talented kids.) The CAD file was then used by Exact Cut (Greensboro) to hydro cut the copper design. 22mil copper can be tough on the hands to shear cut, and the circles in the center of the rays is way too difficult to achieve. I loved the results of the hydro cut and hope to do it a lot more.

The patina on the rays was carefully added and baked in the sun to give it amazing depth of color and texture. The close ups of the copper wire weave and glass show the great detail and attention I wanted the wire design to add to the piece. The entire piece is created from amber Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir as well as few clear vodka pieces.

SOLD - Custom commission piece

Milky Way’s design is my interpretation of the spiraling system consisting of billions of stars. The weaving of the copper wire holds the galaxy of recycled glass together. The glass reflects the depth of the blue darkness of space and bursts of bright light through the clear and amber pieces. It’s center swirl of copper will patina in time, allowing the piece to evolve with time and weather.

Milky was is intended to be displayed within a outdoor landscape or garden. It’s supportive feet are to give it balance and sturdiness while hidden under rock or mulch. The copper frame is soldered and has been treated with a forced acid wash to get the patina process started.

This piece was on display at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, NC until December 6, 2019, with their annual Sculpture in the Garden show. (Update: Milky Way placed 5th out of 44 for the public choice award.)

The recycled bottle glass used was cut and kiln fired from: NYR Organic Cream and Riesling wine (cobalt blue), Bombay Gin (light blue), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (amber), Vodka, Wine and Whiskey (clear) bottles.

This peace was inspired by art of the Hindu God Ganesh’s Elephant head adornment. There are many meanings for this symbol, but I hope the significance of Prosperity and Good Luck are bestowed onto the future owner.

This piece is handmade from hand cut kiln fired recycled glass, woven together with copper wire and set on a pickle juice patina frame. Seasonal light is amazing as it filters through the textured glass and onto the surface it is hung from. If hung in a window the light will reflect through the glass and onto the floor or nearby wall.

Indoor/Outdoor: This piece can be hung on a wall, fence, ceiling or any flat surface, utilizing the pipe clamps shown in the pictures above. I suggest that if it is hung outside, it be in a seasonal porch or a protected area. If you wish to hang it in a window, please let me know and I can attach two copper loops and a chain for you to hang it with.

Glass: LIght amber (Chardonnay and Pinto Noir bottles), dark amber (Pinot Noir/Red wine), light blue (Bombay Gin), bright green (Jameson), brown (red wine) and cobalt blue (Riesling Wine). Each piece is hand cut and kiln fired to endure time and the elements.

Frame: The frame is constructed of copper pipe soldered at the joints with 45 degree fittings. It has been washed over several days with a pickle juice patina. This patina will continue to change with time and weather if hung outdoors - eventually turning to a redish charcoal grey. If hung indoors the change will be very slow. The wire as well.

Wings: Hand cut 22 mil copper sheet treated with a forced patina acid wash. This patina will remain the same if hung indoors. If hung outdoors it will continue to patina and change with time. This wash basically sped up the process.

Dimensions: 31" h x 17" w x .5" depth - with hangers the depth is 1.5"

If you were born and raised in North Carolina you know of the Old Route 10 that spanned from the mountains to the shore.

This piece was created for Susan and Teresa in honor of their family's history on and around Route 10. From growing up on their family farm and drinking Pepsi to opening up an event center on the last piece of Old No. 10 in Hickory. Their dad collected over 300 soda bottles since they were young. 50 of the vintage Pepsi bottles were used for the glass. This piece was all about a tribute to their family.

This was truly a made in North Carolina piece. Thank you to @exactcut for the stainless and carbon steal, GPS Hardwoods of Kernersville for a beautiful piece of live edge walnut, @rusticroutedesigns for engraving the Old No. 10 logo and @galvanized.nc for plasma cutting my Blue Ridge Mountain design. And most of all - Thank You to Susan and Teresa for trusting me with their memories.

Glass and Poplar has found it’s home with Ted and Lisa. Both of whom and their two children all graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. I could not have asked for a better and more loving home for one of my favorite works. Thank you Ted and Lisa.

Originally Glass and Poplar was created for The Caraway Art Project. Since the competition was not carried through, I asked A Stone’s Throw Gallery in Winston Salem to show it. Thank you to Ted and Ann the owners of A Stone’s Through for their support of my work.

Glass & Poplar

Parameters for original competition: All forms of art are eligible, including visual, hand-crafted, audio, fashion, mixed-media, and anything else that your imagination can create, as long as the focus is related to Chapel Hill, NC in some way.

In creating this piece, my thoughts were to blend the history of Chapel Hill, the pride of its residents and graduates, along with my passion for upcycling our local resources.

My choice of Poplar wood as the foundation of Glass & Poplar is deeply rooted within the “Davie Poplar” history from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This tree still stands today as a symbol of where the UNC at Chapel Hill founders met to discuss and plan the future of the university.

The recycled glass and Poplar are woven together with copper, one of the main ores found in North Carolina.

The recycled glass was carefully selected to represent the Carolina blue, an ultimate reference to Chapel Hill’s pride. Clear glass swirls surround the central piece of Carolina blue, representing Chapel Hill’s location within North Carolina.

Process: My passion is to show how beautiful recycling can be. The Carolina blue glass used for this piece came from hand cut kiln fired Pinnacle vodka bottles. The clear pieces came from a variety of old Pepsi, bourbon and whiskey bottles. The Poplar wood was rescued from a wind felled North Carolina tree by a local sawyer. The copper wave and circles from which the glass hangs were treated with a forced acid wash giving it a green patina.

SOLD - Hanging in the home of true family legacy of UNC Chapel Hill graduates

I’m very lucky to have been a part of Mark and Lynne’s love of art by incorporating my designs into their family room makeover. Their gardens and nature inspired this valance of mostly clear glass with some accents of blues and ambers. I wanted their harsh New Hampshire winters and green summers to be magnified through the clear glass design as well as add to the beautiful new layout of the room.

The main picture window design is accompanied by two side windows that carry on the vine from window to window. The main valence is 90”wide by 15” tall.

Within this design are countless white wine, bourbon, whiskey, Bombay, apple juice and Chardonnay bottles.

Cascade showcases the variety of colors and shapes recycled bottles can come in. Created from the bottles of Champagne Magnums, Bombay Gin, various red and white wines, NYR Organic Cream, household jars and large apple juice jugs. Wrapped in copper wire and hung from a hand bowed and patina copper frame. The industrial pipe hangers add to the look and enable the piece to hang at a distance from the wall to reflect light and shadow. This is an indoor or season porch piece.

“Warm Organics” was my solution for a limited use of color challenge. Recycled glass is limited in color as it is, but when this client challenged me to only use greens, ambers, browns and clear for their front door sidelight design, I accepted.

I set out to reflect the clients love of gardening and to create a piece that could easily flow with their interior design of warm tones, traditional ivy wall paper and oak floors; while bringing their garden in all year round. My vision of a growing/moving green stalk toned with swirls of amber and surrounded with cool clear pools took shape and is greatly loved by my client.

“I approached Jennifer Harkey Studio because our home had a plain front door entryway with two vertical sidelights that needed professional help.  I worked with the artist, Jennifer, and after sending pictures and measurements of the door we exchanged a series of emails with designs, questions, and modified solutions.

Jennifer Harkey Studio helped me by suggesting a flowing solution that allowed for varying color that changed between dawn, daylight and night.

The result was exceptional and far exceeded our expectations.  We had incomparable service and attention to our decorating needs, and the sidelights are truly a showcase product for an originally plain entryway.  I’d like to add that the packaging of the large art was a concern; however it arrived with fitted Styrofoam, plywood and secure cardboard via Fed Ex Ground.  Detailed installation instructions with diagrams and mounting hardware were included, making for a quick and easy installation.

One thing I really liked was that we were sent in-process pictures throughout the design and assembly process, allowing the ability to make changes if needed before the art was complete.  However, that wasn’t necessary. I found the experience very stress-free.

Privacy at the Beach

Sherry was looking for color and light that reflected her love of the beach and her need for privacy. This tightly woven design looks amazing in her bright front hallway.

I used several kiln fired recycled glass bottles: Reyka Vodka (light aqua), Chardonnay (amber), Riesling and NYR Organic Cream (cobalt blue), vintage Pepsi (clear), Coke (light green hue) and Canada Dry Ginger Ale (green) soda bottles, Pinnacle Vodka (light blue). The frame is created from .5” copper pipe soldered and treated with a pickle juice patina. The thick wire loops at the top and base are wrapped through a jig I had created for this purpose.

Waves of Riesling is a commissioned piece that is hung on the exterior porch of a client's home. The client wanted to be able to look out their kitchen picture window every day and see the design. Nature's backdrop enables the color scheme to continually change based on season or time of day.

Dimensions are 154" wide x 24" tall. Over 690 pieces of recycled glass was used.

Recycled bottles used were: Riesling, NYR Organic Cream, Vodka, Bombay Gin, Antique seltzer, various clear bottles, Chardonnay and champagne.

As I stated in a few other descriptions, I love the challenge of symmetry with this medium. Whether you hang this as a positive sign or an x the balance of the colors and design will enhance any area indoors or out. 

Created with Bombay Gin for the bright blues, Riesling for the cobalt blues, NYOrganic cream for the browns, Chardonnay for the ambers, vodka and gin for the clear, and tonic for the bright green. All pieces are hand cut, kiln fired and wrapped with copper wire inside a patina copper frame. This piece can be hung out door all year round or indoor. The Bell clamp hangers give the pieces added stability and depth from the hanging surface.
